Gretchen is a native of Birmingham, Michigan.  She went to college at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, before relocating to San Francisco, California where she resided for many years. In 2004, Gretchen moved to Charleston, South Carolina to be closer to her family.  She began painting in 2006 and studied with Martin Ahrens from 2006 until 2010.  In the summer of 2010, she studied for three weeks at the New York Studio School,
with Elisa Jensen.
